9 Tips to Make Moving Less Stressful

4 min read
We hate unpacking

Moving into a new home or apartment can be daunting—whether it’s across the country for a job opportunity or just across town. Managing the logistics of packing up and relocating your entire household can be very stressful and often overwhelming. On top of that, saying goodbye to friends, neighbors and kids’ classmates is never easy.

However, moving to a new place can also be an exciting time that opens the door to new adventures. So, what can you do to help yourself and your family cope with this mixed bag of emotions when preparing for a move? Having an organized plan and enlisting the support of friends and family who can lend a hand (and an ear) will help make moving less stressful so you can embrace the journey.

Here are nine tried-and-true tips to help you navigate the process and mitigate the stress of moving:

1. Create a Detailed Plan

Outline a clear plan for your move, including timelines, tasks and responsibilities. But be realistic about it. Break down the process into smaller, more manageable steps to make it less stressful, and try setting deadlines for each task. Having a detailed plan will help you stay organized and on track throughout the moving process. If you’re moving with a spouse, partner or significant other, work as a team to problem solve, make decisions—and keep the lines of communication wide open.

2. Make a Change-of-Address Checklist

Before you move, it’s essential to notify the right people and organizations. Make a checklist of those who will need your new address. Filing a change of address with the post office should be at the top of your list, then add other important parties such as utility companies and other service providers, bank and credit card companies, tax agencies (IRS and State) and any subscription services you use. Also, arrange for utilities to be turned on at your new home before you arrive to make your move-in day easier.

3. Ask for Support

Moving is a big undertaking, so don't hesitate to ask friends and family for assistance and even emotional support. Whether it’s packing, lifting, organizing, pet sitting when movers arrive or just talking—sharing the load and your feelings during this transitional time can help significantly reduce stress.

4. Hire Movers

Whether you’re moving locally or across the country, do your homework before you hire movers. Trying to save a buck could cost you down the road. Look for reputable moving companies with positive reviews and transparent pricing. It’s critical to know how costs are calculated before you sign on the bottom line. Local moves are usually hourly based, while long-distance moves have flat fees based on distance and weight. If it’s a local move, an area moving company may be a great fit. If you’re moving long distance, there are larger companies with professional movers that specialize in nationwide transit.

5. Secure Important Documents

Keeping your important papers protected should always be a priority, especially during a move. A sturdy lockbox that is fireproof and waterproof is a great option. Some key documents to secure include passports, birth certificates and social security cards. Also consider any financial and tax information, legal papers, medical and prescription records, health and life insurance policies and any moving-related paperwork. During the move, carry the lockbox with you rather than packing it for movers to transport.

6. Declutter Before Packing

From the attic to the basement, moving is the perfect excuse to purge. Take the time to declutter before you start packing. Go through each room and every closet to decide what you want to keep, donate or discard. Getting rid of things you don’t use, like that old treadmill that mocks you from the corner, will lighten your load.

7. Pack Early and Pack Strategically

The sooner you can start packing the better, especially if you plan to hire movers who charge by the hour. You don’t want them waiting around while you pack boxes. Focus on one room at a time. Pack your things systematically, starting with items you don’t use as often and work your way to everyday essentials. Use sturdy boxes and packing materials to protect your items during the move. Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in to make unpacking in your new home easier.

8. Explore Your New Location

Moving to a new city or neighborhood can be both exciting and challenging. Before the move, get online and do a virtual deep dive into the restaurants, retailers, playgrounds, dog parks, recreation spots and other local attractions you’d like to explore once you move. Understand the transportation options and commute times to work or other places. If you’ve got children to enroll in school, research student-teacher ratios, the variety of programs offered and academic performance data. The more you know before you go, the more excited you’ll be to explore in person. Embrace the adventure and soon you’ll feel right at home.

9. Practice Self-Care

Moving is inherently stressful. Accepting that it’s a natural part of the process—and it’s only temporary—can help you better navigate through the tough parts. It’s important to listen to your body. Eat well, go on walks, get plenty of rest and make time for yourself. Remember, you’re not alone in this adventure. Take deep breaths, stay focused on the positive and soon you’ll be settling into your new home!
